Thermador grills & grill modules

The grill module that drops into a Professional range or rangetop, and the outdoor grills this maker used to build. Both are a burner under a heavy grate rather than a burner under a pan, and that changes what fails: the grate, what falls through it, the igniter that sits in the line of everything that falls through it, and a burner that has to run hot for an hour without complaint.

What goes wrong with it

Each one covers the likely causes in the order they are worth checking, and what to do in five minutes before booking anything.

  • A white gas cooktop with black grates and heavy steel knobs
    Usually cleaning, not parts

    Range burner will not light

A burner that clicks and clicks without catching, or one that lights and goes straight out. On a professional gas top most of these are a cap out of place or ports blocked after a boil-over.

    • One burner clicking with no flame
    • Every burner clicking at once
    • A flame that lights then dies

What we do on it

Starting figures for this equipment in South Florida. The exact cost is confirmed after an on-site diagnostic — and this is not the whole list of what can go wrong, so call if your problem is not here.

  • A green circuit board with its capacitors and ribbon cable, close up
    from $95

    Diagnostic visit

We read the codes on site — including the ones a machine with no display blinks out — then test the circuit the code names before saying anything about the repair. The fee is credited toward the work when you go ahead.

    • Codes and blink patterns read on site
    • The circuit tested before a part is named
    • Credited toward the repair
    What this involves
  • A gloved hand with a sponge cleaning the shelf brackets inside an empty refrigerator
    from $155

    Descaling and maintenance

South Florida water is hard, and this platform publishes a code for scale in the heat pump. Descaling, filter changes and the checks that keep a $155 service from becoming a $245 assembly.

    • E12 and E2060 — scale, published as a condition
    • Water and air filters changed and registered
    • Condenser and hood filters cleaned properly
    What this involves
  • A control board in its metal chassis with the loom folded back
    from $340

    Control board replacement

A panel that does not respond, a board that fails its own memory check, or two boards that have stopped talking to each other. Tested before it is replaced, because boards are the most over-diagnosed part in this trade.

    • E005, E009, E010, E309, E310 decoded
    • The harness tested before the board is condemned
    • Option code set after the swap, which is easy to miss
    What this involves
  • Sealed gas burners and their control knobs, close up on a dark cooktop
    from $155

    Gas burner and igniter repair

A burner that clicks and will not light, a flame that lifts off, or one Star Burner that has never been the same since a boil-over. Usually inexpensive parts and careful cleaning.

    • Clicking, lifting and yellow flame each diagnosed separately
    • Caps and ports cleaned and seated correctly
    • Spark module and electrodes tested individually
    What this involves
  • A fitter in safety glasses kneeling at a built-in wall oven, driving a screw into the cabinet frame
    from $195

    Installation

Built-in equipment fitted properly: clearances that let it shed heat, panels that line up with the cabinets, and the settings that only get made once.

    • Clearances and ventilation done to specification
    • Cabinet panels hung and aligned
    • Water, gas and supply checked, not assumed

About Thermador grills & grill modules

A burner under a grate is a different appliance from a burner under a pan

Everything that makes a grill worth having is also what makes it fail differently. The burner runs hot for a long time rather than in bursts. It sits directly beneath the food rather than beside it, so everything that comes off the food lands on it. And the flame is hidden under a heavy grate, which is exactly where a flame sensor has the hardest job. Those three facts account for most of what we are called out for.

What actually goes wrong

  • Lights, then goes out under load. The flame sensor, carboned over, telling the control the burner has quit.
  • Uneven searing. Blocked ports at the end of the grate that gets used, or a grate that is warped or upside down.
  • Igniters that click and click. They live in the drip line; in this climate they also live in salt air.
  • Grates and radiants gone soft. Consumable, replaceable, and worth replacing before they take the burner with them.

Indoor module or outdoor cabinet — say which when you book

A grill module in a Professional range shares the range's gas supply, its controls and its ventilation, so a module problem is often a range problem and the visit is planned as one. An outdoor cabinet is its own appliance with its own supply and its own weather. The two share a parts vocabulary and almost nothing else, and knowing which one you have before we arrive is the difference between one visit and two.

What to have ready when you call

The model number from the plate, whether the grill is a module in a range or rangetop or a cabinet outdoors, whether it is natural gas or propane, and what it does — will not light, lights and quits, or sears unevenly.

Questions about Thermador grills & grill modules

The grill lights and then goes out once I close the hood or start cooking.

That is nearly always the flame sensor rather than the igniter. A grill burner sits under a heavy grate that shields it, and the sensor has to see a flame it can barely reach; carbon on the sensor tip is enough to make the control decide the burner has gone out and shut the gas. Cleaning the tip is a real repair and it is the first thing looked at.

One end of the grate sears and the other does not.

Look at the burner ports along the cold end before assuming anything electrical. A grill burner runs directly under everything that drips off the food, and the ports at the busy end of the grate block first. It is also worth checking that the grate is sitting flat and the right way up — a warped or inverted grate changes the gap to the flame and does it unevenly.

Can a grill module be retrofitted into my rangetop?

On this maker, modules are matched to the deck they were designed for, so the honest answer depends on which generation your appliance is. Send the model number from the plate and we will tell you what the deck takes. What we will not do is fit a module the appliance was not built for: the gas rate and the cutout are part of the design, not a preference.

My outdoor Thermador grill still works. Can you keep it going?

Usually yes, and in this climate that is worth saying plainly: salt air and humidity take the burners, the grates and the igniters long before anything electronic gives up, and all of those are serviceable parts. Where a specific part is no longer made we say so before any work rather than after — and on a cabinet that has spent fifteen years outdoors in South Florida, that conversation is part of the visit.
