Symptom

Thermador range hood not working

A hood that does nothing, runs only on some speeds, or a downdraft that will not rise. On this equipment the blower may be in the ceiling or outside the building, and that changes the whole job.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • Power to a remote or inline blower

Often on its own supply, and often on a breaker nobody associates with the kitchen. The commonest cause of a hood that does nothing at all.

  • The speed control

A hood that runs on some speeds and not others is the control rather than the motor, and it is the cheaper of the two.

  • Grease-loaded filters

Not a failure but the reason a hood that "stopped working" is really just no longer moving air. They go in the dishwasher.

    Descaling and maintenance from $155
  • The downdraft lift mechanism

A motor and a track rather than a fan. It fails in ways ventilation cannot and it is diagnosed as a mechanism.

  • The link to the cooktop

These talk to each other, and there is a published condition for the connection. A hood that has stopped coming on by itself is usually that rather than a hood problem.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Find out which arrangement you have

In-hood, inline in the ceiling, or remote outside. It decides where a technician even starts.

  2. 02

    Check breakers, including unfamiliar ones

A remote blower is frequently on its own circuit that nobody has looked at in years.

  3. 03

    Wash the filters

Straight into the dishwasher. A hood with saturated filters moves very little air and it is not broken.

  4. 04

    Try every speed

Working on low but not high is a different, cheaper repair than nothing at all, and it is worth saying on the phone.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “No response at all from the controls”
  • “Runs on low but not on high”
  • “A downdraft that will not lift”

Two shortcuts

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.

About Thermador range hood not working

Half the diagnosis is where the blower actually is

Ventilation here comes three ways: a blower in the hood, an inline blower in the ceiling run, or a remote blower outside the building. A silent hood may have a perfectly good control and a blower thirty feet away with no power.

Three arrangements, three different jobs

A blower inside the hood is the simplest. An inline blower sits in the ceiling run, quieter in the kitchen and harder to reach. A remote blower is mounted outside the building entirely — quietest of all, and the reason a hood can be silent while its controls are perfectly healthy. Knowing which you have is worth more than any other single piece of information on this page.

Downdrafts are a different appliance

A downdraft has a lift mechanism as well as ventilation: a motor, a track, and a control that knows where it is. It fails in ways a wall hood cannot — stopping halfway, refusing to rise, or rising and not sealing — and it is repaired as a mechanism rather than as a fan.

Questions about thermador range hood not working

The hood is completely dead.

Breakers first, including any circuit serving a remote or inline blower, then the control board. On these installations a silent hood with a healthy control is common enough that we ask about the blower location before anything else.

It does not extract as well as it used to.

Usually the filters, and they are washable. If they are clean and it still underperforms, the ducting or the blower is worth looking at — long runs and multiple bends cost a great deal of airflow.

It used to switch on with the cooktop and has stopped.

They are linked and the link has a published condition of its own. Both appliances are usually fine; what has gone is the connection between them.
