Thermador freezer column not freezing

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The door not sealing
On a freezer this shows as frost as well as warmth. A panelled door that has settled is the usual reason, and the door alarm is often the first sign.
Refrigerator door and gasket repair from $220 -
A furred condenser
The compressor cannot shed heat and the cabinet cannot get down. Cleaning it is ordinary work and it is the cheapest thing on this list.
Condenser and fan service from $280 -
Ice blocking the evaporator
A defrost cycle that is not clearing leaves the cabinet with no airflow, so it warms while the compressor runs continuously.
Condenser and fan service from $280 -
A fan that has slowed
It still turns, so it looks fine. It is not moving enough air, so the cabinet behaves like something much more serious.
Condenser and fan service from $280 -
The sealed system
Last, and only after the four above have been ruled out properly.
Refrigeration sealed system repair from $1,200
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Press ALARM and read the number
Then write it down. It is the only measurement the cabinet offers and it is not repeated.
-
02
Paper test the door
Corners first. A freezer door that is not sealing frosts as well as warms, so look for ice around the opening.
-
03
Clean the condenser
Behind the grille, with a vacuum and a brush. In this climate it is worth doing yearly regardless.
-
04
Run the self-test
Off, five minutes, on with the door closed, SETUP and ALARM OFF held for five seconds.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
Two shortcuts
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.
If the display is showing something
Photograph it before it clears — codes do not wait. Search the full code list
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Thermador freezer column not freezing
Read the highest temperature before you clear the alarm
Press ALARM: the signal stops and the highest temperature the cabinet reached is shown for a few seconds. On a freezer that number is the whole question about the food, and it is shown once.
Columns fail one at a time
A separate freezer column has its own compressor, its own evaporator and its own door. When the refrigerator beside it is perfectly fine, that is not a clue about anything shared — it simply means the problem is in this cabinet, which makes the diagnosis narrower and the repair more contained.
Cheapest first, as always
Door, condenser, airflow, fans, then the sealed system. On a freezer the door has an extra tell: warm humid air arriving continuously shows up as frost around the opening long before the food softens, so a look at where the ice is often settles this before anyone opens the grille.

Questions about thermador freezer column not freezing
Is the food safe?
The highest-temperature reading is what answers that, which is why it is worth pressing ALARM before clearing anything. As a rule, food that is still solid and has not been above freezing for long is fine; food that has softened through is a judgment call and we would not make it for you.
My refrigerator column is fine and the freezer is not.
They are separate appliances with separate cooling systems, so that is expected rather than strange. It also means the problem is contained to one column.
It runs constantly but the temperature looks right.
Worth attention anyway. A compressor that never rests is usually shedding heat badly or fighting a door, and both of those are cheaper to fix now than what they lead to.
