Symptom
Thermador refrigeration alarm sounding
A column beeping with the alarm symbol lit, or a door signal that will not clear. Each alarm means something specific, and one of them is holding a number you will want before you silence it.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
A power cut while you were out
The temperature alarm is doing exactly its job. Press ALARM and read the highest temperature reached — that tells you about the food, which is the actual question.
-
A large warm load put in at once
A full shop in a Miami summer will alarm a healthy column. It clears as the cabinet pulls back down.
-
A door not sealing
The door alarm on a door that looks shut is usually right: a panelled door that has settled, or a seal that has hardened at the corners.
Refrigerator door and gasket repair from $220 -
A sensor reporting
An error message with the alarm symbol is the cabinet asking to be self-tested rather than naming a part. The self-test is documented and you can run it.
Diagnostic visit from $95 -
Low supply voltage
The display simply goes out and no button responds. It clears when the voltage returns, and in storm season here that is a real cause rather than a curiosity.
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Press ALARM before anything else
The signal stops and the highest temperature reached shows for a few seconds. It shows once. Read it.
-
02
Decide which alarm it is
Temperature, door, sensor message or a dark display. They look different and they mean entirely different things.
-
03
Close and reseal the door
The door display should go out immediately. If it does not, the seal or the alignment is the next thing to look at.
-
04
Run the self-test for a sensor message
Off, five minutes, on with the door closed, SETUP and ALARM OFF held for five seconds.

Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Thermador refrigeration alarm sounding
On this make, the alarm is what a code would be
Four things this cabinet can tell you and they are not interchangeable: a temperature alarm, a door alarm, a sensor error message asking for a self-test, and a display that goes dark on low supply voltage. Which one you have decides everything that follows.
Four signals, four meanings
- Temperature alarm — the cabinet has been warmer than its setting. Pressing ALARM shows the highest temperature it reached
- Door alarm — the door is open, held open, or closed without sealing
- Sensor error message — the column is asking to be self-tested rather than naming a part
- Display dark — supply voltage below the minimum. Not a failure, and it returns by itself
Why this stands in for an error code
Thermador publishes error codes for its cooking and dishwashing and none at all for its refrigeration. So on a column, these alarms are the diagnostic information the appliance offers, and they are worth knowing properly rather than silencing. The highest-temperature reading in particular is shown once and then forgotten by the cabinet.

Questions about thermador refrigeration alarm sounding
Can I just turn the sound off?
You can, and the signal volume is adjustable in the settings. Do read the highest temperature first, though — that number is the only thing here that tells you whether the food was ever at risk, and it is not shown again.
The alarm keeps coming back after I clear it.
Then something is still true. A temperature alarm that returns means the cabinet is not holding; a door alarm that returns on a closed door means it is closed but not sealed.
The display went completely dark and nothing works.
That is the low-voltage warning rather than a dead appliance. It comes back on its own when the supply recovers. If it persists on a circuit that is otherwise healthy, then it is worth a call.
